Theo Walcott believes Arsenal’s new 4-3-3 formation will give him more scoring opportunities this season.

The Arsenal striker made an eye-catching return to the team against Blackburn on Sunday. The 20-year-old hit the fifth goal in the 6-2 win over Sam Allardyce’s side in his first appearance of the season after injury.

Afterwards he set his sights on more and believes Arsène Wenger’s new system could provide them.

“I haven’t [set a target] really but I would be happy with 10 goals or more,” said Walcott. “We’ll see.

“I think this formation gives you more license to go forward so I should be among the goals a bit more this year.

“There is a lot of interchanging throughout the positions, which gives defenders problems because they come across a different player. It’s a good formation.

“In the Under-17s at Southampton we played this exact formation and I seemed to do quite well on the right side. Hopefully I will fit into it quite well again."

Walcott was one of six different scorers on Sunday. In all 15 players have hit the net in Arsenal’s dozen games so far. The latest on that list believes this can only be good for the team.

“We have scored so many goals through a lot of different scorers so we are not just relying on one player,” he said.

“It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet but it makes your job easier if you are going back into a flying Arsenal team.”

Walcott’s 21-minute cameo was timely. A back injury meant he only figured in one half of one pre-season game. He prepared for the Blackburn match with an hour against Olympiacos Under-20s last week.

“It’s not nice being injured,” he said. “You just want to be back on the pitch playing with all your mates like you do every weekend and get into the rhythm of things.

“I needed that game behind closed doors just to get me going. I haven’t really had a pre-season so it’s nice to play that sort of game to get your fitness up and see what your levels are like.

“To get back into the routine of things was great and it was fantastic to be involved.

"It was just good to come off the bench and be playing in a brilliant team again.”
