Walcott happy with 'background' title bid

By Richard Clarke

Theo Walcott is happy for Arsenal's title challenge to slip under the radar for the time being.

At the weekend, Arsène Wenger's side maintained a six-point gap to leaders Chelsea with a 2-0 win over Sunderland. It is a significant margin but one that Walcott feels his side can reduce during the run-in.

Nonetheless, that divide - plus recent defeats to Manchester United and Chelsea - mean Arsenal are rated as the outsiders of leading three.

Walcott, however, would not have it any other way.

"A lot of people tend to write us off but we just stay in the background doing our thing," he said. "We are only six points behind now.

"There is a smile on everyone's face at the moment and now we have got to show more. Keep playing, getting results. That's what you do to win a title.

"We can't keep thinking about those games [against Man United and Chelsea] - they are gone. We were disappointing on those days but it doesn't matter. Last year Man United only won one of their four games against the top four.

"Every match is difficult but it's a funny game and that is why everyone loves it.

"However although it's looking good for us it will be a very difficult game at Stoke next weekend. It was frustrating earlier in the season with results not going our way, especially in the big matches. But it is all starting to come together now and, especially if we can get our big players back to full fitness, we can have a great end to the season."
