Vermaelen - We are not focused on individuals

By Nick Teale

Thomas Vermaelen insists Arsenal are not focusing on Barcelona's solo talent, not even his former team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swedish striker spent three years at Ajax before moving to Juventus. His career then took him to Inter Milan before a move to Barcelona last summer.

Attending a pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Vermaelen reiterated the message conveyed by Arsène Wenger earlier in the day - Arsenal will not be focusing on their visitors' individual ability on Wednesday night.

"We are not focused on individuals," he stated. "We have to play our own game and play as a team.

"You are aware of the qualities of the opponents, but you also know what your own strengths are.

"Zlatan is a complete striker. He is a tall, strong player and has developed a lot. I know his qualities, but I will play my own game.

"Lionel Messi is a very good player, one of the best players in the world with a lot of qualities.

"He is a real footballer who people enjoy watching play. However, there will be no time to be intimidated tomorrow.

"You have to be focused on your own performance and the team's performance. You cannot look at how Messi is, because you have to play your own game."
