Robin van Persie says that tonight's clash with Shrewsbury Town will be a "cup final" for the Club's youngsters.

The captain cut his teeth in this competition, scoring his first goal for Arsenal in an away win at Manchester City a little under seven years ago.

Van Persie will not be involved this evening but he knows how much the Third-Round tie will mean for Chuks Aneke, Ignasi Miquel and Arsenal's other young hopefuls.

"I’ve spoken to a couple of the younger guys in the squad this week and they’re looking forward to it so much," he told the Official Matchday Programme.

"A Carling Cup match is perhaps their moment, their cup final every time, and the first thing they do is look to see when these fixtures are being drawn out. These guys are dying to play in the game and you’ll see lots of talented players tonight.

"I remember that excitement very well, because the Carling Cup was huge for my career. I scored my first goal for Arsenal in this competition, away at Manchester City, and it was the most amazing moment of my life so far.

"For development of talent this competition is the very best – it helped me improve my game during my first couple of years here so I know from experience that it’s a great competition."
