Vic Akers OBE... talking to Arsenal TV Online

TV Online exclusive: Vic Akers OBE

Vic Akers says it is a 'major honour' to have been awarded an OBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours list.

The Gunners' kit man received the award for services to sport, in particular his work with the Arsenal Ladies team.

Akers was pivotal in the foundation of a women's team at the Club and managed the side for 22 years, guiding them to an incredible 32 trophies in that time.

"I'm very honoured to have that bestowed upon me," he told Arsenal TV Online in the dressing room ahead of Wednesday night's game against Portsmouth.

"I had an inkling about it two months ago when I received a letter saying that it may happen and asking if I would be willing to accept. My family have always been supporters of the Royal Family so it's a major honour for me to receive any award from them."

Subscribers can now watch the interview in full. Akers discusses:

  • his delighted at receiving the honour
  • how the Arsenal Ladies team came about
  • his role in the side
  • balancing his job as Arsenal kit man with managing the Ladies' team
  • what the future holds for him
