Mikael Silvestre... speaking to Arsenal TV Online

TV Online: Silvestre - My future in football

By Chris Harris

Mikael Silvestre has not ruled out a move into coaching or management when he finally hangs up his boots.

The 32-year-old has no plans to retire yet of course - indeed, he will meet Arsène Wenger in March for talks over a new contract at Arsenal. But Silvestre will weigh up a number of options when his playing days do eventually draw to a close.

The French defender intends to spend more time working with his charity, Schools For Hope, but the prospect of following in Wenger's footsteps is a tempting one.

"Maybe management, maybe coaching, maybe both, I don't know yet," Silvestre told Arsenal TV Online.

"But I think I will stay in football because football has given me a lot, I have learned a lot so I want to give something back. But I haven't set my mind on something specific yet. Management is difficult, it's a real commitment, a way of life and you have to give it 100 per cent, there is no other way to do it.

"I have been fortunate to experience the Premier League for so long and I have enjoyed it. You never know if it is your body or your head that will let you down but so far I feel really good.

“Sol Campbell has trained with us and he said to play as long as you can. Most of the players who retired have said that so I think I will trust them."

Subscribers can now watch the full interview with Mikael on Arsenal TV Online. He discusses:

  • how he sees his future
  • how long he has left at the top level
  • why Arsenal is a good place to be at his age
  • the temptation of coaching and management
  • the character you need to be a manager
  • his charity, Schools For Hope
  • giving something back to the game
