Emmanuel Frimpong... talking exclusively to Arsenal TV Online

Frimpong - My journey from Ghana to Arsenal

By Chris Harris

Emmanuel Frimpong has come a long way in a short time.

The Ghana-born England youth international was one substitution away from being Arsenal's youngest ever player when he was named on the bench in the Carling Cup last season and he was within touching distance of a Premier League debut when he made the squad for the trip to Portsmouth in May.

Frimpong started the pre-season opener at Barnet in July but his progress has since been checked by a nagging groin problem. The 17-year-old is almost back to full fitness now and he would love to get another first-team opportunity.

"It was amazing [to be involved at Portsmouth]," he told Arsenal TV Online.

"I remember going out to train with the first team the day before the game and Arsène Wenger said to me that I'm going to be on the bench. I couldn't believe it.

"Unfortunately I have been injured since then but hopefully that has gone now. I’m used to training with the first team and I have got to know some of the players, so hopefully that will carry on for me."

Frimpong has an intriguing story to tell about his journey from Ghana to Arsenal via Broadwater Farm in Tottenham and subscribers can hear it now on Arsenal TV Online. He discusses:

  • his injury-hit start to the season
  • playing in the pre-season opener at Barnet
  • his journey from Ghana to Arsenal
  • the financial assistance he needed to pursue his career
  • his strengths as a player
  • midfield colleague Francis Coquelin
  • getting on the bench for the first team
