Denilson... ready to deputise for Alex Song

TV Online: Denilson - I can step in for Song

By Chris Harris

Denilson is ready to step in for Alex Song when the Cameroon international heads to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Song has been a mainstay in the defensive midfield role for Arsenal this season but he will be representing his country in Angola in January, leaving a void in front of the back four after Sunday's FA Cup tie at West Ham.

Arsène Wenger has a number of options to fill that space with Cesc Fabregas, Abou Diaby and Aaron Ramsey all capable of adapting to a more defensive role, but Denilson is seen by many as the most suitable deputy for Song.

The Brazilian midfielder loves to get forward but he is willing to temper his attacking instincts for the good of the Arsenal team.

"It doesn't matter for me where I play, it is just important for me to help the team," Denilson told Arsenal TV Online.

"I am here because I want to help so if Alex goes to Africa I would like to [replace him]. Cesc Fabregas can play there, Emmanuel Eboue as well, but it is a good opportunity for me.

"The manager has not spoken to me about it but of course I will play in the defensive midfield role if he needs me there. I am happy [to do the defensive work]. If the boss said 'Denilson, I want you to stay back, I will stay back.

"I will work 100 per cent to help the boss because he has given me this opportunity and I have to show what I can do."

Subscribers can now watch the full interview with Denilson on Arsenal TV Online. He discussed:. He discussed:
