National friendships are put on hold when countrymen come face-to-face on the field, according to Fernando Torres.

The striker will line up against fellow Spaniard Cesc Fabregas when Arsenal and Liverpool clash at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night. The two remain friends and hold the utmost respect for one another. However, in the build up to the match, all niceties are forgotten.

"No I have not spoken to with him," said Torres. "I will speak with him tomorrow on the pitch. Fabregas is a fantastic player. You know he is important to Arsenal and to the Spanish national team.

"But it is not only Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal have very good players and so do we. I will be focussed entirely on the game."
