At Tuesday’s press conference, Arsène Wenger discussed Jack Wilshere’s injury and subsequent operation. He said:

on Jack Wilshere being fit for the Euros...
“Yes, I don’t have any worries for that. He will be 12 weeks in a boot and after that it is rehab. That 12 weeks brings us to around Christmas. If all goes well, you would think he will be fit again to play in half the time you are in the boot – six weeks. Count 10 to be closer to the truth, so it’s 22 weeks to be capable to play football again.”

on taking Wilshere on tour...

“We made a scan before we left and it was all right. But the crack in the bone became worse and worse. People tell me it didn’t heal because there is no blood supply so it doesn’t glue together. We had to put a screw in. When you see the scan it looks like a little hole in the bone. We needed to screw that together because it would not heal. When he was in the boot it did not get better, it could have got even worse.”

on suggestions Wilshere was overplayed last season...

“You can blame yourself if you think people warned you ‘be careful he has a problem’. But he had no problem. If you say to a player who is 18 years old who has no problem ‘you don’t play’, he doesn’t understand. It’s difficult, especially at the end of the season we couldn’t rest him at all because Fabregas was injured always and therefore it was more difficult to rest Jack. Maybe we played him too much, I don’t know. His injury isn’t necessarily linked with that.

“I would like to [remind] you of the adversity we faced when we said he should not play in the Under-21s. Most of the people wanted him to play in that, you should read the statements from people when we said he needs a rest.”

on the feeling of relief over Wilshere’s successful operation...
“When the operation goes well, yes [it is a relief]. When people go into surgery you never know what they find. What they found was a very clean ankle and they came out very positive. Sometimes you are scared the player goes in and they say ‘look, it was worse than what we expected’. Or they say ‘it was better’. They said it was better than what they expected it to be.”
