Wojciech Szczesny believes Arsenal can take great heart from a fine defensive performance in Dortmund.

The Gunners looked to be heading for victory in Germany after Robin van Persie’s first-half strike but were dealt a cruel blow in the 88th minute when Ivan Perisic equalised with a stunning volley.

Szczesny says the draw was ultimately a fair result for both sides and hailed the back four in front of him for a strong showing at the BVB Stadion.

The Polish goalkeeper spoke to Arsenal Player after Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Dortmund, and you can watch the video clip now by clicking on the link to the right.

Wojciech, are you happy with the point?

After a goal like that I think we will take the draw. Usually when you concede in the 88th minute you are gutted, but credit to Dortmund, I think they played really  well in the second half and probably deserved a goal.

Did you think the team would see it out?
I did. Over 90 minutes I thought we defended really, really well. Even the free-kick they scored from I thought we defended good, but the guy put it in the top corner and he'll probably never do that again. I thought we were going to see it through, but in the end we were happy with a point.

How much of a testament do you pay to the defence in front of you?
I said to the guys after the game, 'listen, we defended fantastic', and if you're going to concede that is the way you want to do it. It was a deserved draw for both sides.

What will this result do for confidence?
We gained a point in Dortmund in one of the toughest fixtures, which will give us a confidence boost. Hopefully we can go to Blackburn and get the three points.

Would you say Arsenal have turned a corner after the last two results?

I think we have showed a lot of people what we are made of. We showed that we can play very well and defend very well which we did today, and we have more confidence.

Was this more like the real Arsenal?
It's unlike Arsenal I think, it was more a defensive performance from us to be honest. We deserved at least a point, and we were happy with the performance.

Was it a freak goal that beat you, or simply one of quality?

You can't say it's a freak, it's an unbelievable strike. He connected cleanly, but I believe he won't do that again for a long time.

Presumably with the way you defended, Arsenal will take quite a lot from this game?
Of course, i think they only had one chance in the first half, and we were playing against a very offensive side. To give away just that chance and then concede the way we did I feel we should be happy with our defensive performance.

The goal you scored before half time, it was a great time to get it wasn't it?
It was, it gave us a lot of confidence going into half time. We believed we could see the game out - we didn't but we'll take the point.

What was the atmosphere like from a player's point of view?
It was one of the best I've ever experienced in my career, but this is the kind of game you like to play in. It is a great venue, great atmosphere and a game between two good sides. That's what you play football for.
