Wojciech Szczesny says Arsenal showed a different side of their game in Saturday's 2-0 win over Southampton.

Olivier Giroud's brace sent the Gunners four points clear at the top of the Premier League in a game that saw few chances at either end.

I thought we were a better team at doing what we planned on doing before the game and we deserved the victory

The 23-year-old keeper was delighted with how Arsenal's defence dealt with Southampton's pressing tactics.

We knew they were going to press very high up the pitch," Szczesny told Arsenal Player. "They press as high as anyone in the league really. We were going to be under a bit of pressure, especially when we were 1-0 up.

"But I don't think they created a clear goalscoring opportunity so credit to my defence, they played a fantastic game.

"It's very hard to play pretty football when teams press you high up the pitch," he added. "Sometimes you've just got to get rid of the ball and play it to the striker and hope that he wins headers and holds the ball up for you.

"Ollie [Olivier Giroud] did a fantastic job holding it up for us and linking up with the players who were coming in. I thought we were a better team at doing what we planned on doing before the game and we deserved the victory."
