Wojciech Szczesny believes Arsenal’s defensive performance against Sunderland is a solid platform to build on.

Szczesny and the back four kept a clean sheet as Arsène Wenger’s side picked up a point on the opening day of the new Premier League season.

The Poland international was pleased with the solidity of the whole team and insists there are positives to take into back-to-back away games at Stoke and Liverpool.

“It was a typical first game of the season and both teams played with the handbrake on,” Szczesny told Arsenal Player. “We managed to get a clean sheet and gave ourselves a chance to win the game at the end.

“But overall I am happy with the defensive performance of the team and I hope we can keep it going. We want to get off to a good start. We did not do that last year but we know how important it is to get ourselves up there in the table and then stay there.

“We want six points from the next two away games. We know how tough it will be but we believe we can do it. We go to Stoke on Sunday and they will be a tough test but we will make sure we do our best and hopefully win the game.”
