Wojciech Szczesny admits he had no concerns about new centre-back pairing Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker against Marseille.

The duo played together for the first time since the former’s return from injury last week, helping Arsenal to a clean sheet in the Champions League Group F tie at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

Goalkeeper Szczesny was confident they would be fine together.

“We kept a clean sheet, which is all you can ask for from a back four,” said the goalkeeper.

“I think they did well together but I have been training with them for a long time and I see their qualities.

“We looked really solid today, so as I said I just hope we can keep it going.”
