Wojciech Szczesny is happy with what he has seen defensively from Arsenal during pre-season.
The Polish goalkeeper watched on as second-half goals from Pablo Aimar and Nolito saw Benfica come from behind to win the Eusebio Cup on Saturday night. It was the third time in a week that Arsenal had let a lead slip after Boca Juniors and New York Red Bull rescued draws at the Emirates Cup.
But Szczesny, who is expected to start between the posts when the Premier League season kicks off on Saturday, has only conceded twice during the summer and he is confident Arsenal's back four are ready for the new campaign.
“I’m quite happy with the defensive side," he told Arsenal.com. "We didn’t concede in the first half [against Benfica] and I’m fairly happy with how we have done in pre-season.
“I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the results. The most important thing is fitness and showing the manager that you should be starting on August 13.”
Saturday’s trip to Newcastle will see Arsenal return to St. James’ Park for the first time since last season’s 4-4 draw and Szczesny admits there is an extra motivation to kick off in style after what happened in the North-East.
“There is a determination to win the game because I believe we lost the title at Newcastle last season,” he said.
“We want to turn up at Newcastle and show that it was a one-off accident and it will not happen again.”Copyright 2016 The Arsenal Football Club plc. Permission to use quotations from this article is granted subject to appropriate credit being given to www.arsenal.com as the source
