SOS Charity Event - Picture special

The wives and partners of Arsenal players Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and Thomas Vermaelen have joined forces and formed partnerships to create ‘ABC’, which will host this year’s inaugural SOS Children’s charity event.

Aimee Van Ommen (partner of Vermaelen), Bouchra Van Persie (wife of Van Persie) and Carla Dona Garcia (partner of Fabregas), collectively known as ‘ABC’ have planned a lavish fundraising event which will be held at London’s exclusive Claridges hotel, on Sunday 5th December 2010. The aim of the event is to raise money for SOS Children’s orphanages in Zambia.

In 1949, the first SOS Children’s Village was founded in Austria to help children who had lost their homes and families during the Second World War. Today, SOS Children is the world’s largest orphan charity. The main role is to help children with absent parents, including Aids orphans, street children, child soldiers and children orphaned by war, poverty, illness or natural disasters.

There are currently three SOS Children’s Villages in Zambia which support over 38,000 people and they have plans to build a new Children’s Village, Nursery School, Family Strengthening Programme (FSP) and Medical Centre for Chipata, in Zambia’s Eastern Province and will also provide support to the local primary school. The event on the 5th December is aimed at raising money specifically for the cause’s new project.

Van Persie, who currently sponsors a child with his wife Bouchra in Eldoret, Kenya commented earlier today: “Working alongside SOS Children’s Villages makes you consider how fortunate we really are – for children in Zambia to have an education, a roof over their heads and medical assistance is classed as a luxury and it’s something we take for granted”.

Robin adds: “My wife Bouchra has seen with her own eyes the amazing work that SOS Children’s Villages do – their work ensures that children are given the right start to life, which they deserve - I am honoured to hopefully be making a difference to other children's lives”.

The event will comprise of a three-course sit down dinner, and will be hosted by much loved British entertainer, BAFTA award winner, co-creator and star of Gavin & Stacey - James Corden. Irish comedian and television presenter Dara O’Briain noted for hosting topical panel shows such as The Panel and Mock the Week will be delivering his acclaimed stand-up routine.

Music entertainment on the night will include live performances from London Indie Rock band The Noisettes. The band who is fronted by lead singer and fashionista Shingai Shoniwa, have achieved commercial success and nationwide recognition with their single “Don’t Upset The Rhythm” which reached Number 2 on the UK singles chart in Spring 2009.

Guests will also enjoy a Selfridge’s fashion show, as well as a full DJ set from Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong. Tong is known worldwide by fans of electronic music for hosting programmes such as “Essential Mix” and “Essential Selection” on the radio, for his record label FFRR Records, and for his performances at nightclubs around the world. He is also nicknamed as Lord of the Dance.

The exclusive invite only event will raise money through ticket purchases and by a Sotheby’s auction held on the night itself. Items to be auctioned off will include a training session with the Arsenal first team, exquisite jewellery as well as many other money can’t buy items such as signed memorabilia by legendary sports stars, plus the chance to buy equipment for the orphanages such as an ambulance and classroom equipment.
