Alex Song believes there is a real fighting spirit in the Arsenal squad.

The Gunners had to mull over two disappointing results prior to the international break but two wins from two, including last night’s breeze past Shakhtar, has shown their resolve.

Song broke the deadlock in that 5-1 Champions League win with a cheeky finish following a goalkeeping error. Now the midfielder wants Arsenal to take their new-found confidence into a vital game at Manchester City on Sunday.

“We lost the two games [against West Brom and Chelsea] and we’ve showed good character in the last two games we’ve played,” said Song.

“We have won two games and now we need to rest and be ready for Sunday because it is a very big game against Manchester City. Always when you play against Manchester City it’s a good game but now we need to be sharp for this game.

“We are still confident we just need to rest ahead of the trip and go there to get the result that we want to get - though we know it’s not easy.”

The Cameroon international also praised the influence of Cesc Fabregas after the captain returned from injury to score Arsenal’s third goal of the night from the penalty spot.

“Today he showed again when he is in the team we are stronger,” said Song.

“We are all very happy because Cesc is an important player for us. We are very happy to have him.

“We want all our players back, we need Robin, Thomas and when everyone is back in the squad we will be even stronger.”
