Silvestre - Wilshere is one of the best

By Nick Teale

Mikael Silvestre believes Jack Wilshere is one of the brightest young footballers he has ever played alongside.

The French defender is set to captain Arsenal in Wednesday night's Champions League clash with Olympiacos and also likely to be on the pitch is 17-year-old Wilshere.

The English midfielder made his Gunners debut in the Premier League victory away at Blackburn Rovers last season and scored his first goal for the Club just 10 days later in the Carling Cup win over Sheffield United.

Since then the youngster has continued to make his mark in all competitions, and consecutive man-of-the-match awards in the Emirates Cup earned him his first England Under-21 call up at the start of the current season.

Wilshere has been named in Arsenal's 18-man squad for the Champions League trip to Greece and Silvestre is full of praise for the midfielder.

"He's among the best young players I've trained and played with," said the Frenchman.

"Wilshere is very tricky to play against. He's close to the ground so it's difficult to get the ball off him.

"He protects the ball well. He's unpredictable so when you train with him everyday it's difficult to catch him.

"He's really matured. We expect him to be always a step ahead of the others and we hope he carries on like this."
