Bacary Sagna has welcomed the competition that Carl Jenkinson will provide for the right-back spot this season.

The summer signing from Charlton made an auspicious debut on Wednesday night as Arsène Wenger's side beat a Malaysia XI 4-0 in the first game of their Asia Tour.

Jenkinson made an excellent covering tackle to keep Arsenal's clean sheet intact in the first half and got forward to set up a chance for Thomas Vermaelen. The 19-year-old was joined in the starting line-up by fellow teenager Ryo Miyaichi and Sagna had praise for them both.

"They were excellent," he told Arsenal Player. "I thought they played their own games, they weren't scared to play. They were full of confidence and that's good for the team. I hope they will push us because we need this kind of player.

"I don't have anything to teach Carl, I just need to give him as much confidence as I can. We are all going the same way, we are all looking forward, and [having him here] is good for me because he will be an opponent [in the right back spot] but a friend as well.

"I hope he will do well this season and I wish him all the best."

The full interview with Bacary is now available on Arsenal Player. Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Frimpong also give their reaction to the Malaysia XI game in this exclusive clip.
