The left back made his first full senior appearance in a 2-1 defeat against France on Wednesday and performed with a maturity beyond his years in an assured defensive display.
Although there is plenty of doom and gloom surrounding Fabio Capello’s side at the moment, Sagna feels Gibbs is a shining light and a talent that should be appreciated.
“He did very well because it was his first or second appearance so English people can be proud of him,” he said.
“For me he will be the next English left back. He’s only 21 and he can improve a lot. He is already a top-class player and has great potential.
“I’m quite proud to see him playing the way he did. I know he is great player and he is a great left back.
“He always gives 100 per cent and he deserved to start. I think he did quite well. [France] found it difficult to go through the left side. His pace caused us problems going forward in the second half.”Copyright 2013 The Arsenal Football Club plc.
