Jock Rutherford becomes Arsenal's oldest player 20 March 1926
Jock Rutherford is not one of Arsenal’s most well-known names, despite having spent 12 seasons at Highbury, but he holds the longest standing individual player record at the Club.
On March 20, 1926 he became the oldest player ever to have appeared for Arsenal - and that record still stands to this day.
In a run-of-the-mill mid-season match Arsenal beat Manchester City 1-0 at Highbury with the aid of an own goal. But for Rutherford, aged 41 years and 159 days, it was a record-breaking encounter.
The ageing player had only managed two previous appearances that season, against Manchester United and Blackburn in January. He had, however, racked up 233 appearances for the Club in total and scored 27 goals over those 12 years.
The Gunners went on to finish runners-up in the table that season, five points behind Huddersfield.
