Vito Mannone... Goalkeeper presents Hertswood School students

Mannone presents year 12 students with award

Students from Hertswood School, in Thrift Farm Lane were guests of honour at Emirates Stadium recently to be presented with Arsenal in the Community’s Module one Coaching Certificate for their part in the school’s IMPACT community sports project.

Year 12 students Daryl Atkins, Marc Asamoah and Lloyd Amponsen achieved the Arsenal Soccer Schools Coaching Module through training sessions with Arsenal in the Community coach, Kurt McGinley. They then put the skills learnt into practice by helping primary school children in the Borough with their football and literacy skills as part of a project co-ordinated by Arsenal Football Club.  Arsenal’s young goalkeeper Vito Mannone presented them with their certificates just before kick-off.

The scheme, run in partnership with Hertsmere Borough Council, saw the young people assisting in the delivery of the Arsenal Double Club scheme, an initiative that fuses the popularity of football with classroom teaching.  The project sees a 45-minute session of in-class literacy teaching followed by a 45-minute session of football.  The scheme was delivered once a week to Year five pupils from Shenley Primary School, in London Road, Clore Shalom School, in Hugo Gryn Way, and Cowley Hill School, in Winstre Road.

With the help of their PE teacher, Mickey Engwell, who heads up the IMPACT football team at Hertswood School and Alan Sefton, Head of Arsenal in the Community, the boys worked with the primary school children on the football element of the scheme on Wednesday afternoons for 11 weeks at Arsenal’s indoor pitch at their training ground in Shenley.

Mickey Engwell said: “It was great to be guests of honour at Arsenal Football Club and enjoy a pitch-side presentation before the game. It was a great pleasure to work with all staff at Arsenal Football Club and I’d like to extend a thank you to them all and those Level One Coaches who have helped these young people achieve this football qualification.”

Alan Sefton, Head of Arsenal in the Community added: “ These young men have been positive role models to the children.  Their dedication and commitment is testament to the success of this project. It is great to be able to recognise their endeavours today.”

Helen Bottomley, Community Sports Officer at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: "The IMPACT students have been fantastic. Their time and effort is really appreciated by the children, the coaches and everyone else involved with the project.”
