Lukas Podolski believes Saturday’s astonishing 7-3 win over Newcastle at Emirates Stadium was hugely important for Arsenal.

After an inconsistent start to the season, the Gunners have hit form over the Christmas period to rise up to fifth in the table after four successive victories.

The German striker admits it was vital for the team to start stringing together positive results as they challenge for a top-four place during the second half of the campaign.

“We need this run as there are three or four teams at the top [to compete with],” he told Arsenal Player.

“We got the three points [against Newcastle] and for the people around the world watching on TV and those in the stadium it was a great game to watch with 10 goals.

“It was a crazy game. We were in front [three times], then Newcastle got it back, so I was happy to be on the pitch today.

“We must win our matches, and we have now won four in a row. It is important to keep fighting well, look forward to the next game and get the three points.”
