2009/10 PLAYER REVIEW

2009/10 Player Review: Sol Campbell

Sol Campbell likened his 2009/10 campaign to a Hollywood movie and, although it lacked a schmaltzy, silverware-tinged ending, you can see what he means.

The veteran centre back's top-flight career looked well and truly over at the start of the season when he joined League Two outfit Notts County and lasted just one game - a defeat at Morecambe. But those who doubted Campbell's resilience were put right in the months that followed.

The 35-year-old was given permission to build up his fitness at London Colney and did so well he earned a short-term contract with the club he left in May 2006.

An injury to William Gallas gave Campbell his chance in the first team and 14 appearances, one goal and a Player of the Month award later, the big man is very much back in the big time.

SOUNDBITE
"There's a lot for me to be proud of really, especially because it was not a straight-forward season! You probably could have made a movie out of it."

FINEST MOMENT
The North London derby defeat at Tottenham was hardly a night to savour but it contained one defining moment for Campbell. Nothing encapsulated his renaissance more than the stoppage-time sprint which left Spurs youngster Gareth Bale in his wake. Arsenal stalled in April but their elder statesman rose above their faltering title challenge.
