If he stays injury-free we'll see the best of Abou Diaby. That's a regular refrain when fans discuss the French midfielder and, in 2009/10, they pretty much got what they wanted.
Fair enough, Abou succumbed to calf and knee problems early in the New Year but he made 35 starts in all competitions - 10 more than his previous season's best. And at times he was Arsenal's most dynamic player. Abou transformed defence into attack with a twist and a driving run, he sniffed out seven goals and his physical presence was priceless when Alex Song was not around to provide midfield muscle.
Like the rest of the squad, Abou's form dropped off at the business end of the campaign but don't be surprised if he's a star in South Africa this summer - and in England next season.
| Competition | Appearances | Goals |
| League | 26+3 | 6 |
| FA Cup | 0+1 | 0 |
| Carling Cup | 0 | 0 |
| Champions League | 9+1 | 1 |
| Totals | 35+5 | 7 |
SOUNDBITE
"This year in central midfield he has really stepped up and improved tremendously. He has become a very strong player." - Arsène Wenger
FINEST MOMENT
Abou's precision in front of goal was impressive all season as Portsmouth, Birmingham, Alkmaar and Aston Villa can testify. But his vital headed winner against Liverpool raised the biggest cheer. Arsenal needed three points that night to keep their title challenge on track - and Abou delivered.
