Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Week: Nov 16-22
Pancreatic cancer charities in the UK are launching the first Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Week, from 16th to 22nd November.
The Awareness week has been designed to increase knowledge and understanding of pancreatic cancer, a ruthless and silent killer. It is the fifth largest cause of cancer deaths in the UK, yet few people have heard of it. This silent nature has meant that research, service provision and patient support has gone under-resourced for many years.
Although pancreatic cancer accounts for five per cent of all UK cancer deaths, it receives only around one per cent of research money from the major cancer funding organisations. So there has been little improvement in the overall survival rate for the last forty years. The five-year survival rate is a dismal three per cent.
Pancreatic cancer charities believe that the time has come for these numbers to change. They are now urging people to spread the word about the need for further research as part of the November awareness week.
Pancreatic Cancer Key Facts:
Only three per cent of those diagnosed are still alive five years after diagnosis
No improvement in overall survival for 40 years
The fifth commonest cause of cancer death in the UK
The average life expectancy from diagnosis is six months
Around 7,600 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year in the UK, and there are around the same number of deaths from the disease.
