Nicklas Bendtner, Fabrice Muamba
Hull City 2-0 Birmingham City, February 24
Nicklas Bendtner played the entire second half as Birmingham
slipped to defeat at Hull. The hosts took the lead 10 minutes in
when former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour crossed for Dean Windass
to sweep home. The Blues then had defender Radhi Jaidi dismissed
for bringing down Stuart Elliot and had to play nearly an hour with
10 men. Journeyman striker Windass completed the scoring from the
spot on 57 minutes after Nicky Forster was fouled by Martin Taylor.
Arsenal's other loanee Fabrice Muamba did not feature.
Alexandre Song
Charlton Athletic 4-0 West Ham United, February 24
Alexandre Song played 85 minutes as Charlton Athletic recorded an
emphatic 4-0 win over fellow relegation strugglers West Ham United.
The victory saw Charlton boss Alan Pardew get one over on his
former club and heap further misery on Alan Curbishley, his
successor at Upton Park. Darren Ambrose opened the scoring on 24
minutes before further strikes from Jerome Thomas and Darren Bent
gave the hosts a 3-0 half-time lead. Former Arsenal winger Thomas
then completed the scoring on 80 minutes, beating keeper Robert
Green in style. The win sees Charlton leapfrog the Hammers into
18th place, however Wigan's 1-0 victory over Newcastle means
Pardew's side remain seven points from safety.
Joe O'Cearuill
Brighton and Hove Albion 0-2 Bristol City, February 24
Joe O'Cearuill played a full 90 minutes as Brighton's
three-game winning streak was halted by Bristol City. A brace from
Phil Jevons put paid to the Seagulls' recent purple patch, the
striker scoring on 43 and 84 minutes after replacing Wayne Andrews.
The first was a fine volley and the second a penalty after Dean
Hammond had fouled Brian Wilson. To add insult to injury Brighton
finished the game with 10 men after Tommy Fraser received his
marching orders for a foul on City keeper Adriano Basso.
Kerrea Gilbert
Cardiff City 4-1 Preston North End, February 23
Kerrea Gilbert did not feature as Cardiff City moved back into the
play-off places with a comprehensive victory over Preston North
End. Midfielder Peter Whittingham put the Bluebirds ahead on the
stroke of half time before three goals in two second-half minutes
decided the game. Michael Chopra and Graham Alexander hit a penalty
for each side before Roger Johnson headed the hosts into a 3-1
lead. Chopra converted a Whittingham cross with 23 minutes
remaining to complete the scoring.
Arturo Lupoli
Sunderland 2-1 Derby County, February 24
Arturo Lupoli did not feature as Sunderland inflicted a third
successive defeat on promotion hopefuls Derby County. Liam Miller
struck a late winner for Roy Keane's side to move the Black
Cats to within three points of their opponents and league leaders
West Bromwich Albion. David Connolly had given the visitors the
lead from the spot on 27 minutes after he was fouled by Marc
Edworthy. Giles Barnes pulled Derby level with a superb solo strike
on the hour mark before Miller's dramatic last-minute strike
stole all three points.
