Chuba Akpom is used to being ahead of the curve. The pacy young striker made his debut for the Arsenal Under-18s when he was just 15 years old, he is now a key member of Terry Burton's under-21 side and he has been called up to the England Under-19s. It has been quite some rise.
A powerful forward, Chuba scored twice in 15 appearances for the under-18s last season and caught the eye of Burton in pre-season. That led to a call up to the under-21s and he has not looked back since. Now his task is to lead the line in the NextGen Series.
“I am not really fazed by anything,” Akpom said. “You have to be confident when you go out on to the pitch and if you believe in yourself, a lot of things can go well for you.
“I’m quite surprised that I am already starting to play for the under-21s because I was hoping to play for the under-18s this season, because I’m only a first-year scholar. But I hope I can get more starts and wins for the [under-21s] over the course of the season.
“It is really nice to play at this level and I hope I keep going in this way - maybe I could even get a place on the bench in the Capital One Cup. With enough hard work, that could possibly happen for me.”
Considering his rate of development, you certainly would not bet against it.Copyright 2013 The Arsenal Football Club plc. Permission to use quotations from this article is granted subject to appropriate credit being given to www.arsenal.com as the source 29 Aug 2012
