Stunning new pieces for Arsenal museum

If you’ve visited the Arsenal Museum, you’ll know what a treasure trove of Gunner memorabilia it is.

That horde has just been added to with some fabulous new additions – including one very, very special piece. That is nothing other than a shirt signed at the time by Arsenal’s 1933/34 side – as well as Herbert Chapman himself.

The Gunners were two-thirds of the way through their memorable hat-trick of league titles at that stage, and were known as the finest team in the land. The likes of Cliff Bastin, Eddie Hapgood and Joe Hulme all put pen to fabric – with the shirt originally dedicated to Tom Webster, the renowned cartoonist who is widely reported to have inspired the Club’s now trademark white sleeves when he wore a red sleeveless sweater over a white shirt while playing golf with Chapman.

It is thought that the shirt may have been presented as an example of the new design, and thus as a ‘thank you’ to Webster. It is a remarkable, iconic exhibit from a quite extraordinary period in Arsenal’s history, and we are delighted to be able to show all visiting Gooners.

There’s another new signed shirt on display too. This one dates from our centenary year, 1986, and the signatures of players such as Martin Hayes, Stewart Robson and Paul Davis are all visible on another major piece of Arsenal history.

Finally, to complete the trio of items kindly donated by a fan who has emigrated to Australia, there’s something that will be familiar to many of you – an Arsenal tube sign!

The Arsenal Museum is proud of this new collection, and welcomes supporters as ever. It is situated in the Northern Triangle Building, on the north-east side of the Podium around Emirates Stadium. Opening times are 10am-6pm from Monday to Saturday and 10am-5pm on Sundays, with last admittance an hour before closing time. On matchdays, it is open from 10am until half an hour before kick-off.

Tickets to the museum cost £6 (£3 concessions) and can be purchased from the Arsenal Box Office at Drayton Park, by calling 020 7619 5000, or as part of a stadium tour.
