White visits new national netball tournament

Ninety-two girls took part in the inaugural Premier League 4 Sport National Netball Tournament at the Sobell Leisure Centre in Islington on Thursday May 31.

The youngsters competed for the PL4S national title at U14 and U16 level, with sides from Arsenal and Hull City claiming the honours in the respective age categories.

Away from the competition, participants were treated to a visit from Arsenal Ladies star Ellen White and England netball sisters Sasha and Kadeen Corbin. The VIP trio got stuck into the action, cheering the teams on, posing for pictures and trying their hand at a ‘Beat the Star’ contest in which the youngsters challenged them to a shoot off.

Ellen was thoroughly impressed by what she saw. “It’s brilliant to see so many youngsters passionate about sport,” she said. “Everyone was having a great time, and with the Olympics weeks away now events like this are a great advert for the impact that sport can have. It was a real privilege to be a part of.”

Beth Jones, children and young people manager at England Netball, said: “The tournament was a great success. This achievement is testament to Arsenal’s outstanding partnership work with Islington Netball club as well as with the other Premier League clubs. We hope to continue to build upon this success with next year’s tournament, continuing to inspire more young netballers to continue playing the game.”

The tournament was conducted in partnership with Arsenal in the Community, England Netball, the Islington Netball Club, the Liverpool Foundation, the West Brom Foundation, the Hull Tigers Community Trust and Aquaterra Leisure Islington.

Netball is one of four new sports that has been recently introduced to the Premier League 4 Sport scheme as part of a recent £2 million investment that will see the programme extended until at least 2013.
