Per Mertesacker admits that Tuesday's draw with Wolves represented a "missed opportunity" for Arsenal.
Arsène Wenger's side saw Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool all drop points on Boxing Day and went into their own Christmas fixture knowing that a victory would take them into the top four.
Mertesacker went as close as anyone to grabbing a second-half winner against a resilient Wolves side but he and his team-mates had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Yes, of course [it is a wasted opportunity]," he told Arsenal Player. "Many teams struggled on Monday and we wanted to take our chance. We were a little bit unlucky and for us it's not so good.
"It was a disappointing result for us. I think we created a lot of chances, especially in the second half. We tried to get the second goal but it was not possible. We had a great chance to get into fourth place so it's very disappointing.
"The equaliser was a lot of deflections in our box and we couldn't react. But we've had a good month so let's keep going and do our best in the next games, especially on the 31st [against QPR] and then Fulham."
