Damian Martinez has paid tribute to Arsenal goalkeeping coach Gerry Peyton for helping him to settle in England.

The 20-year-old, who has already earned a call-up to the Argentine national team, was signed from Independiente in August 2010.

Martinez made his Arsenal debut against Coventry in the Capital One Cup last month, and says any nerves he may have had before the game were eased by Peyton.

“Gerry said, ‘Emi, we are totally confident in you. I know you are going to do well so make sure you’re relaxed and everything will be fine’. He made me 100 per cent confident,” Martinez told Arsenal Player.

“When I first came, I started learning English with him. I think he’s a great goalkeeping coach. He’s helped me so much.

“When I came, the pitches were so wet - it’s the opposite in Argentina where the pitches are always dry.

“He helped me a lot. He told me to relax and said I’d be fine in a couple of months. I got it and I’m improving every single day with him.”
