Community Shield Gresty Road Wed, August 2, 2006, 8.05pm

There's nothing strange about Arsenal Ladies getting their hands on some silverware, but there was an unfamiliar ring to last night's Community Shield celebrations.

Faye White is usually presented with the trophies but, on this occasion, she watched from the wings as Jayne Ludlow hoisted aloft Arsenal's latest prize.

It's a scenario White may have to get used to as she embarks on the long road to recovery from a knee ligament injury. Ludlow will lead the Ladies in her absence but the Wales midfielder hopes her understudy role is short-lived.

"It's terrible news for Faye," Ludlow told Arsenal.com. "Obviously it's the second time she's had such a bad injury and she will be a huge loss, but I'm sure she'll be back quicker than expected and hopefully before the end of the season.

"I do enjoy the captaincy, but then again I feel that on the field we need quite a few leaders. It worked well tonight though and hopefully during the season I can do the same and we can keep on winning."

Injuries to White and Yvonne Tracy have left Vic Akers short of defensive options but there is a surplus of talent further forward. New signings Karen Carney and Katie Chapman linked up for Arsenal's second goal against Everton and Ludlow believes the new arrivals will keep everyone on their toes.

"Both girls did really well," she said. "We've got a great squad of players now and there's competition for places. That can only benefit the team because people are going to have to play well to get in the starting line-up.

"As for the game, it was a good workout. You could see that in the second half when we tired a little bit and the football wasn't as good. But in the first half I thought our performance was superb and hopefully there will be more to come.

"The league and the cups are always our main target, but if we can go one better in Europe this year and actually get to the Final then we'll all be happy."
