A group of more than 50 youngsters from Arsenal in the Community and the West Ham United Community Sports Trust joined forces earlier this month as part of a drive to promote volleyball across the two clubs.

The Arsenal boys and girls were selected from Holloway School and Camden School for Girls and were split in to six squads of five players to face off against their east London counterparts.

Even though it was the Hammers youngsters who eventually triumphed on the day, the competition was played in a great spirit and inspired the group to carry on playing the sport.

One of the Arsenal youngsters involved, Oscar Pulpito commented: “It was hard and a challenge but I enjoyed it. The West Ham team was technically better than us.” Fellow player James Slade added, “It was a new experience for all of us. We enjoyed playing West Ham - a team we have never played before.”

Gary Beckford, Volleyball England London Legacy Manager, was also pleased to see the two clubs’ hard work come to fruition: “Well done to Arsenal and West Ham for organising this event. They are the collaboration of many meetings, calls, and people. The matches were a real success and some of the players showed incredible potential. Even the younger players improved as the games went on.”

As the Premier League 4 Sport programme moves into its third year, all Premier League clubs involved with the scheme are currently working on projects that will see the initiative continue to flourish beyond London 2012. Competitions such as this have proved valuable in helping young people to not only take up a new sport, but also showing some of the more experienced players the level that they should be aspiring to.

Arsenal PL4S Volleyball currently runs sessions out of three schools of which anyone can attend:
Tuesdays - Holloway School, Islington - 3.30-5.30pm
Wednesdays - Camden School for Girls - 4.30-6.00pm
Saturdays – Clapton School, Hackney – 1.30-3.30pm
