Colin Lewin... successor to his cousin Gary

Lewin - I'm not nervous about replacing Gary

This season sees the start of a new era in the medical department at Arsenal.

Following Gary Lewin’s departure to the FA as England’s Head of Physiotherapy, cousin Colin has taken the reins. He is the one the fans will now see running onto the pitch to stricken players.

But it’s hardly a brave new world in the physio’s department. Colin’s elevation marks a seamless progression following 13 years’ experience alongside the departed Gary. There is no sign of nerves.

“We’re all sad to see Gary go,” Colin told the Arsenal matchday programme. “He has been doing his job for 22 years and I can’t think of anyone in the game who can match that. When you have that kind of experience you become very good at your job, and Gary is undoubtedly a fantastic physio.

“We’ll see him fairly frequently especially as part of his remit is to monitor the fitness of the best young English in the country and we have a fair few of them!

“If I’d never run on a pitch before I’d probably be nervous. But I’ve done it loads of times alongside Gary in first team games and on my own in Reserve matches. To be honest you don’t really notice the crowd as you are so involved with what’s happening on the pitch.

“On matchdays now I’ll be the only physio travelling but I will have two masseurs with me and of course Doctor Beasley who the fans will have seen in the technical area and on the pitch occasionally.”
