Jens Lehmann

Jens made what he - and everybody else - thought would be his final appearance at Emirates Stadium in May 2008 when Everton were the final visitors of the season. The German goalkeeper came off the bench with 20 minutes left and then stayed on the pitch at the end to receive a standing ovation from the Arsenal crowd. Afterwards he gave his reaction to an emotional afternoon in an exclusive interview with Arsenal TV Online.

Jens Lehmann saves a penalty against Villarreal

Jens charted high in our summer poll to find the greatest moments in Arsenal's history thanks to his heroics in the Champions League Semi-Final of 2006. Jens kept Villarreal at bay throughout the second leg in Spain but it all boiled down to one kick, and one save, two minutes from time. When Gael Clichy was adjudged to have fouled Jose Mari in the closing stages, Juan Roman Riquelme was given the chance to level the aggregate score from the penalty spot. Jens also featured strongly in our Top Fives series as Arsenal fans chose their favourite saves, volleys, headers and plenty more besides. Not surprisingly, Jens' spot-kick heroics at Villarreal in 2006 received plenty of votes. Juan Roman Riquelme was the man charged with levelling the Semi-Final on aggregate but Jens dived to his left to push away the spot kick. Shortly afterwards the final whistle blew and Lehmann threw his shirt into the away end as the Arsenal squad celebrated on the pitch.

En-route to the Champions League Final in 2006 Arsenal secured a 1-0 aggregate win over Real Madrid thanks to a brilliant second-half stop by Jens. Arsène Wenger's side had registered a famous victory at the Bernabeu in the first leg of their First Knockout Round tie but with less than half an hour remaining in the return fixture Raul hit the inside of the post from 25 yards, leaving Lehmann grounded. But the keeper leapt to his feet instantly and with Raul's second effort heading into the back of the net he somehow managed to paw the ball aside.
