Internationals: Tragedy overshadows qualifier
Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue
Ivory Coast 5-0 Malawi, Abidjan, March 29.
Ivory Coast’s World Cup qualifier was over-shadowed by the death of at least 22 people in a crush at the Houphouet-Boigny Arena in Abidjan. More than 130 people were injured. For the record, the hosts won 5-0 through goals from Didier Drogba (2), Bakary Kone, Salomon Kalou and Romaric. Both Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue played throughout.
Robin Van Persie
Holland 3-0 Scotland, Amsterdam, March 27
Robin scored Holland’s second goal in their comprehensive victory over Scotland. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had opened the scoring after 30 minutes before Van Persie thundered home a close-range header from Arjen Robben’s corner in first-half stoppage time. The 25-year-old was substituted just after the hour mark before Dirk Kuyt added a third in the 78th minute.
Aaron Ramsey
Wales 0-2 Finland, Cardiff, March 28
Aaron came on after 56 minutes of Wales’ disappointing defeat against Finland. Jonatan Johansson handed the visitors the lead three minutes before the break and substitute Shefki Kuqi sealed the victory in stoppage time. The defeat leaves John Toshack’s side fourth in Group Four and they now trail leaders Germany by seven points.
Johan Djourou
Moldova 0-2 Switzerland, Chisinau, March 28
Johan came on in second-half stoppage time during Switzerland’s comfortable victory at Moldova. Swiss talisman Alexander Frei handed the visitors a 32nd-minute lead before Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes added a second in the closing stages. The victory moves Otmar Hitzfeld’s side joint-top of Group Two.
Emmanuel Adebayor
Togo 1-0 Cameroon, Accra, March 28
Emmanuel struck the only goal of the game as Togo edged past Cameroon. It took only 11 minutes for the 25-year-old to strike but he did go on to miss a penalty 13 minutes from time.
Nicklas Bendtner
Malta 0-3 Denmark, Ta’Qali, March 28
Nicklas limped off after 29 minutes of Denmark’s straight-forward victory in Malta with an injured knee. Soren Larsen put the Danes firmly in the driving seat with a first-half brace before Morten Nordstrand added a third a minute from time.
Andrey Arshavin
Russia 2-0 Azerbaijan, Moscow, March 28
Andrey completed 90 minutes in Russia’s routine win against Azerbaijan. Tottenham’s Roman Pavlyuchenko put the hosts ahead after 32 minutes and Konstantin Zyrianov doubled the advantage in the 71st minute. Guus Hiddink’s men are now second in Group Four, eight points behind Germany, with a game in hand.
