Group A, Uefa European Under-19 Championship

Henri Lansbury and Gavin Hoyte both played 90 minutes as England kicked off their Uefa European Under-19 Championship campaign with a draw against Switzerland.

Brian Eastick’s side took the lead in the 34th minute through a fine free-kick by Leicester’s Joe Mattock but were cruelly denied all three points by a stoppage-time strike from Sebastien Wutrich.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for England who had enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and created many more chances than their opponents.

After their disappointment, England must regroup quickly. They face host nation Ukraine in their second group match on Friday at Shakhtar Donetsk’s Olimpiyski Stadium.

Elsewhere in Group A, the hosts played out a goalless draw with Slovenia. In Group B, France drew 1-1 with Serbia while Spain came from behind to beat Turkey 2-1.

(Rhys Murphy was an unused substitute for the young Lions)
