Theo Walcott... runner-up medal no consolation for young winger
Internationals: England humbled by Old Enemy
Theo Walcott and Kieran Gibbs have both been included in Stuart Pearce's squad for England's European Under-21 Championship campaign in Gothenburg. Read on for their latest exploits..
Theo Walcott, Kieran Gibbs
Germany U21 4-0 England U21
Walcott and Gibbs both completed 90 minutes as England Under-21s suffered a heavy defeat to Germany in the European Under-21 Championship Final on Monday night.
Because of Gabriel Agbonlahor’s suspension, Stuart Pearce started with Walcott as centre forward while Gibbs took up his familiar left-back berth.
The former-Southampton man looked to be enjoying his striking role and almost opened the scoring in the third minute but fired just wide from 15 yards.
But Germany soon assumed control, led by the imperious playmaker Mesut Ozil. The Werder Bremen midfielder supplied Gonzalo Castro with the opening goal in the 23rd minute before he doubled the advantage from 35 yards just after the interval.
Duisburg striker Sandro Wagner struck a late brace to add gloss to the victory but, in truth, it was well deserved. The ‘Old Enemy’ strike again.
