Arsène Wenger has expressed his delight at the news that John Hartson is winning his battle with cancer.

In July, the former Arsenal striker was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his brain and lungs.

Hartson had emergency surgery and was given a 50:50 chance of survival. But on Friday morning his agent Mark Brodie released a statement saying that Hartson’s cancer had been "virtually eradicated".

Wenger put football matters to one side during his pre-match press conference to show his support for the 34-year-old.

“I saw that [news] today and I was very happy when I read that, I must say, because it was such a shock [when he was diagnosed],” said the Arsenal manager.

“John played here when I arrived and I was very happy when I read that this morning. I wish him well.”
