Arsène Wenger has confirmed that Gilberto will miss the start of the new season.

The Brazilian midfielder, one of the contenders to succeed Thierry Henry as Arsenal captain, led his country to victory at this summer's Copa America in Venezuela.

Gilberto was on international duty until July 15 and will be given time to recover before returning to training with Arsenal.

"Gilberto will miss the start of the season," said Wenger. "He has three weeks holiday after the 16th of July so he will not be back until the 6th of August."
