Gatting on victory in Marseille

Steve Gatting

Steve Gatting spoke to Arsenal.com after his side's impressive 4-1 win over Marseille on Wednesday afternoon.

on a satisfying win and performance...
We are very pleased with the win in our first Youth League game. We started off really well against a strong wind which made us play a little bit deeper. Then towards the end of the first half we found it a bit more difficult to get out but I thought we defended fairly well, although at times we played too deep and invited them onto us.

on the quick start setting the tone…
An early goal helps because it sets the tone to how we're going to play. We said to the boys before the game to go out and be positive from the word go and the boys did it. In the second half we started really well again and got three goals up.

on the importance of putting points on the board so early…
It's nice to win, especially away from home because you're not quite sure how the boys would react to the pressure of the game. So it's nice to get a victory under our belts and play the way we did.

on the clinical finishing…
We are always working on our end product and making forward runs and penetration. At times in the second half I thought we did it well and at times our final touches and end product let us down a bit.

on the team's experience of travelling with the first team…
It's a great experience for the boys to be in with the first team, especially being on the same plane as them and travelling with them. We got three schoolboys that would be at school and they're sitting on the same plane as our first team.
