ARSENAL 2-0 WEST HAM
Division One
Highbury
January 9, 1971
London derbies between Arsenal and West Ham are always hard-fought - and you can bet this one was no exception.
The two footballers in this FreezeFrame are Frank McLintock and Billy Bonds, men who never flinched from a challenge. They are going through the pre-match formalities in the centre circle with referee Jack Taylor at Highbury in January 1971.
McLintock was the happier of the pair 90 minutes after this coin toss. His Arsenal side won 2-0 in the first League fixture of what would be an historic year for the Club.
George Graham and Ray Kennedy were on target for Bertie Mee's side as they extended their unbeaten run to 14 games - 11 of which had been won. Kennedy would end the season as Arsenal's top scorer with 23 goals.
The Gunners faltered in their next two fixtures - losing at Huddersfield and Liverpool - but got back on track to pip Leeds United to the title in May. And, as we all know, the Double was clinched five days later at Wembley.
Arsenal team: Wilson, Rice, Simpson, McLintock, Nelson, Storey, Sammels, Graham, Armstrong, Radford, Kennedy.
FreezeFrame is a regular series on Arsenal.com which brings you a classic image ahead of every match. Roll your cursor over the players and click for more information.
