Arsenal

WIGAN ATHLETIC 2-3 ARSENAL
Premier League
JJB Stadium
November 19, 2005

Often this feature can throw up a grainy old image from the 1960s or perhaps even earlier. But there's no chance of that happening where Wigan are concerned.

November 19, 2005 is less than five years ago but it marks the date of the first ever meeting between these sides. Wigan had never been in the top flight until then; Arsenal haven't been out of the top flight since 1919.

The first 45 minutes were almost worth the long wait. Five goals flew in before half-time as Wigan and Arsenal served up a cracker.

A certain Thierry Henry was in his pomp back in 2005 and he doubled Arsenal's lead in the 21st minute after Robin van Persie had fired the visitors ahead. Henri Camara dragged Wigan back into it before a sublime Henry free-kick from all of 25 yards appeared to have sealed the deal.

But Wigan had a showman of their own in Jimmy Bullard and he snatched a goal on the stroke of half-time to set up an intriguing second half.

In the event the goals dried up but Arsenal stood firm to register their first win in their first game against Wigan. The Latics would have their revenge though - they knocked the Gunners out of the Carling Cup Semi-Finals later that season.

In our FreezeFrame image, Cesc Fabregas and Gilberto are battling for the ball with Wigan striker Jason Roberts - the man who broke their hearts at Highbury in that Cup tie.

Arsenal team: Lehmann, Lauren, Toure, Campbell, Cygan, Ljungberg (Senderos 89), Fabregas, Gilberto, Pires (Flamini 75), Henry, Van Persie (Bergkamp 75). Subs not used: Reyes, Almunia
