WEST HAM UNITED 2-2 ARSENAL
Division One
Upton Park
February 25, 1978
Arsenal head across London on Sunday to face West Ham, a team that has always made life difficult for the Gunners at Upton Park.
Our latest FreezeFrame takes us back to a typically hard-fought yet entertaining local affair from February 1978. Arsenal were in the midst of a strong FA Cup run but still had designs on qualifying for Europe via the League after bouncing back from their mid-1970s gloom.
They could only manage a point on this occasion and Malcolm Macdonald was largely responsible for that after scoring both Arsenal goals. 'SuperMac' netted 26 times in all competitions in 1977/78 and was on target in every round of the FA Cup - except the Final of course, which Arsenal lost to Ipswich Town.
Our picture shows West Ham midfielder Alan Curbishley bursting past Alan Sunderland (right) and David Price (right, hidden). The point helped Arsenal towards a fifth-place finish in Division One but West Ham dropped into the second tier.
They were still there two seasons later when the Hammers pulled off one of the all-time FA Cup shocks, beating Arsenal in the 1980 Final at Wembley.
Arsenal team: Jennings, Rice, Nelson, Young, O'Leary, Brady, Price, Sunderland, Rix, Macdonald, Stapleton. Sub: Walford.
