West Bromwich Albion

Premier League
The Hawthorns
May 2, 2005

As Arsenal prepare to welcome West Bromwich Albion to Emirates Stadium for tonight's Carling Cup tie, it's worth remembering just how pivotal that competition can be in a young player's career.

Take Robin van Persie. He was one of the shining lights of Arsenal's run to the 2004/05 Quarter-Finals and opened his account for the Club in the Third-Round win over Manchester City.

The Dutchman's form in that competition earned him more first-team opportunities and he went on to score 10 goals in his debut season, netting in the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League too.

Robin finished the campaign in style with two goals in the FA Cup Semi-Final and a well-taken penalty in the Final shoot-out against Manchester United. In between, he was the key to a 2-0 victory at West Brom.

Our FreezeFrame image shows the Dutch star celebrating in style after firing Arsenal ahead at the Hawthorns in the 66th minute. Edu added a second in stoppage time to secure three points.

Arsenal: Lehmann, Lauren, Toure, Senderos, Cole, Fabregas (Bergkamp 74), Vieira, Gilberto, Pires, Van Persie (Edu 74), Reyes. Subs not used: Campbell, Almunia, Aliadiere
