Arsenal

Swansea City

ARSENAL 2-1 SWANSEA CITY
Division One
Highbury
January 1, 1983

Swansea City have been a breath of fresh air during their debut Premier League season - but we've had to wait a while to see them in the top flight.

The Welsh club scaled the heights of sixth place in the 1981/82 campaign but they slumped the following year amid financial woes. Swansea were relegated and had not been back at English football's top table until this term.

Today's FreezeFrame focuses on Swansea's final campaign in the old First Division and a narrow defeat at Highbury on New Year's Day.

Arsenal were starting to experience troubles of their own under Terry Neill as that hat-trick of FA Cup Finals from 1978 to 1980 disappeared into the distance. The Gunners had finished fifth - two points ahead of Swansea - in 1982 but had to settle for 10th a year later amid growing concern.

All the same, Neill's side had some momentum when Swansea came to town after beating Tottenham at Highbury five days earlier. They also had a new signing to parade - Vladimir Petrovic.

The Serbian only made 22 appearances for the Gunners but he was clearly a class act and he helped Arsenal to victory on his debut against the Swans.

Petrovic is pictured in our FreezeFrame image, as are goalscorers on the day Alan Sunderland and Tony Woodcock. Brian Talbot is the other Arsenal player in the picture.

Arsenal team: Jennings, Hollins, Sansom, Talbot, O'Leary, Robson, Davis, Sunderland (Chapman), Petrovic, Woodcock, Rix.
