ARSENAL 4-0 LIVERPOOL
April 20, 1992
Arsenal 4 Liverpool 0. That kind of result doesn't come along too often but that's what the Highbury scoreboard proclaimed when the final whistle blew on April 20, 1992.
George Graham's side simply blew the Reds away that day amid a run of games which was arguably the most entertaining sequence of fixtures of the Scot's Highbury reign.
A wrretched winter - Arsenal took just four points from seven games between Boxing Day and February 1 - left the Gunners' title defence in tatters but they finished the campaign with a 17-match unbeaten run, playing some scintillating football along the way.
One reason for that was the installation of David Rocastle in central midfield. His vision and flair complemented the more prosaic qualities of David Hillier while Anders Limpar and Paul Merson provided pace and guile on the flanks. Kevin Campbell and Ian Wright added power and potency up front.
Arsenal hit seven past Sheffield Wednesday and four past Crystal Palace at Highbury and refused to let up when Liverpool came to town. Hillier rifled them ahead, Ian Wright doubled the lead and then Limpar produced a moment of true magic, lobbing keeper Mike Hooper from just inside the Liverpool half.
Our FreezeFrame image shows Wright slotting home Arsenal's fourth after beating Hooper and Steve Nicol while Rocastle looks on.
Arsenal's late run earned them a fourth-place finish in Division One - 10 points behind champions Leeds. Liverpool ended up in sixth. Neither club would be satisfied with a repeat of that this season.
