ARSENAL 3-1 SUNDERLAND
February 28, 1970
Twelves games to go, six points to make up on the leaders. Arsenal have it all to do in the title race and they can scarcely afford to slip up again in the Premier League, starting on Saturday with the visit of Sunderland.
A nice comfortable win like the one they managed against the Mackems almost exactly 40 years ago would go down very nicely.
On that occasion Arsenal were trundling towards a 12th-place finish in the old Division One but they had more than enough to see off Sunderland at Highbury.
Peter Storey, Eddie Kelly and Ray Kennedy were the scorers - and all three would go on to write their names in Arsenal history the following season as the League and FA Cup Double was secured.
Our FreezeFrame image shows another Double hero, John Radford, tangling with Sunderland defender Len Ashurst.
In the background is Peter Marinello. The Scottish winger had been dubbed the 'new George Best' when he arrived at Highbury a month earlier but didn't manage to live up to his potential - despite a debut goal at Old Trafford.
Arsenal team: Wilson, Storey, McNab, McLintock, Robert, Kelly, Marinello, Sammels (Court), Radford, Kennedy, Graham.
