Hull City

League Cup
October 22, 1988

Arsenal-Hull games were collectors items before last season.

The Tigers were promoted into the top-flight for the first time in May 2008 and immediately made their mark with a stunning 2-1 victory at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal's previous home game against Hull came almost 20 years earlier on October 12, 1988 when the Tigers visited Highbury in the League Cup.

George Graham's side, finalists in the last two years, already held a 2-1 advantage from the first leg in Humberside. And they cruised through to the Third Round with a 3-0 win in front of their own fans.

Paul Merson got on the scoresheet that night and our FreezeFrame image shows him celebrating with centre-back Steve Bould.

Bould, of course, is currently the coach of Arsenal's Under-18s and led the young Gunners to Youth Cup glory in May. His team started the defence of their trophy with a penalty shoot-out win over Crewe Alexandra this week.

Also in our FreezeFrame image is David Rocastle, who died tragically young but still has his name cheered to the rafters by Arsenal fans home and away.

Rocastle and company did not reach the Final of the League Cup 21 seasons ago but they did of course win something rather more significant - the League title, after that dramatic win at Anfield.

FreezeFrame is a new series on Arsenal.com which brings you a classic image ahead of every match. Roll your cursor over the players and click for more information.
